MD Gets Rousing Reception in the Volta Region

The MD as part of his tour to the operational areas of ECG to interact with staff, visited the Volta Region on Friday 13th December, 2019.

Upon his arrival, the Management of Team Volta thrilled the MD with the infamous Borborbor dance that the people of the Volta Region perform to welcome and honor royalty during celebrations and a sash which read “MD WOEZOR VA TEAM VOLTA “ to signify the hospitality identity of Team Volta.

In his welcome address, Ing. Delali Oklu, General Manager of Team Volta, highlighted the success story of the Region in 2019 and enumerated some strategizes the Region has adopted in Revenue Collection, Supply Reliability and Customer Satisfaction.

According to him, “the Region has reoriented faults teams to become Maintenance teams to prevent faults from occurring, bush clearing activities and mass monitoring of prepaid customers have been intensified across all relevant areas”.

Ing. Kwame Agyeman-Budu, MD, in his remarks assured staff of Management’s unflinching support to ensure all workers work under better conditions. “My administration will ensure staff are rewarded for initiatives and properly motivated to work towards the achievement of the vision of the company”, he said.

The MD unveiled a two-year plan to tackle the meter situation of the company which includes the replacement of all faulty meters to ensure customers get meters when they apply.

Ing. Agyeman-Budu also informed staff that plans have commenced to ensure parliament makes power theft a criminal case.

ECG staff assured of protection as two are picked up for assault

The acting General Manager of the Accra West Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Mr Emmanuel Ankomah, says the company will do all within its power to safeguard its staff from harm.

“In partnership with the security agencies, we have put in place elaborate measures to identify, surcharge and rectify all illegal connections in customers’ installations in the region,” he said.

Mr Ankomah also advised customers to freely report any suspected illegal connections to the nearest ECG office and promised that aside from the identity of the whistle-blower being protected, there was a cash reward for such persons.

Obra spot

Mr Ankomah was reacting to the latest attacks on some technical staff of the ECG by two middle-aged men at the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Accra.

The two who allegedly assaulted the ECG staff are John Arthur and Benjamin De-Graft Mensah.

Narrating the incident to the Daily Graphic, the ECG Accra West Regional Revenue Protection Manager, Mr Ebenezer Fiador, stated that following a tip-off that some squatters in the area were engaged in varied forms of electricity theft, a technical team was detailed to do an on-site investigation.

Illegalities

‘’The massive illegalities we identified were not only ripping the company of much needed revenue but they posed an imminent threat to life and property in the area.

“The technical team disconnected all the illegal connections and surcharged the users for the stolen power,” he said.

Mr Fiador continued that after the disconnection, the squatters failed to show up to settle the bills, and a follow-up investigation revealed that they had engaged private electricians to reconnect supply to them.

An attempt to disconnect the customers again was met with threats of violence, including an attempt to set the ECG vehicle ablaze.

Mr Fiador said the police were called in to intervene and they arrested the suspects

MD pays surprise visit to Roman Ridge District

The Managing Director, Mr Kwame Agyeman Budu on Wednesday 11th December, 2019, made a surprise visit to the Roman Ridge District to confirm the information he had from Management about rolling out the new Kamstrup Meters and how effective they will be for customers.

Management introduced the new Nuri meters around June 2019 which had been piloted till now and established to be rolled out in the entire district. This meter makes purchasing of credit and viewing of customer’s data such as balance left, consumption history easier as compared to the previous Nuri Meters which had issues with delays in reconnecting and updating customers balances due to communication challenges.

The Managing Director visited houses around Roman Ridge to inspect their meters and to get firsthand information/feedback from them. He checked if truly customers can purchase credit online without visiting an ECG vending point and the distance the wireless user interface linked to meter should be from the meter before they can pair.

Mr Budu was briefed on the differences and advantages of the new Nuri to the old one. He appreciated how in the new meter design, the compartment of the relay was different from the modem and the meter terminal cover is made transparent to enhance detection of meter bypass or any illegalities during inspection.
He confirmed that sending text messages from our servers to customers are not needed in the new design because balances are displayed on the User Interface Unit (UIU) .

Another advantage was on billing, with this meter, billing is done internally in the meter and not on our servers as in the old version. This prevents customers from getting negative balances on their accounts whenever there is a break in communication between the meter and the server in the old Nuri Meter models.

Customers may also use the ECG mobile app to purchase credit on this meter as well as using the User Interface paired to the meter to load credit.

At the end of the inspection, the Managing Director was convinced that there was an improvement in the new Nuri meter and promised to improve on the internet infrastructure to assist customers to purchase credit where ever they find themselves.

ECG recoups over Gh¢200,000.00 from customers in Ho

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Volta Region, in the last three months has recouped GH¢209,264.78 from prepaid customers who illegally used power in ECG’s designated Ho District.
