ECG Celebrates 50years. +++ 50 Years of Powering the Socio-Economic Growth and Development of Ghana

The much anticipated Strategic Business Unit project slated for the Ashanti Region was officially launched by the Managing Director in Kumasi on Friday, December 11, 2015. By the launch, the Ashanti East and Ashanti West divide ceases.

The launch was witnessed by six ECG Directors and some distinguished representatives from the financiers: GEDAP/SECO, consultants from SWECO/AZOROM, the PURC and GRIDCO.

Albeit, the strategic business unit project has one year to make every necessary impact to enable it to be replicated in the remaining three strategic business units outlined for the Company. The other three areas earmarked for the SBU are Accra SBU, South Western SBU (Western and Central) and South Eastern SBU (Tema, Volta and Eastern).

Recounting the genesis of the concept at a staff durbar at the Danyame district office, the Managing Director, Mr. Robert Dwamena said, the journey begun some thirty years ago when the Power Sector Reforms Programme was crafted by the then Ministry of Energy and Power.

He said on December 29, 2009 the Board of Directors passed a resolution to operate the Ashanti Region along the model of a Strategic Business Unit on pilot basis for a period of two years, however, the contract appointing the consultant SWECO/AZOROM for the implementation was signed in December 2014. The funding for the project was provided by SECO and it is being implemented under the GEDAP Programme.

According to the Managing Director, the Company, led by the former Director of ICT, Mr. Kwaku Boadi, has worked with the consultants and held a number of stakeholder consultations, sensitization and workshops to clearly define the structure which will help achieve a closer relationship between decision making and operations. This will help align decisions with specific operational needs in the business unit.

Mr. Dwamena inferred that under the programme, a number of projects were outlined for implementation in order to bring transformation and efficiency into the utility sector, ensure quality service delivery, and also make the company profitable.With the new concept, a Director and four General Managers have been appointed to take charge of managing the business. The General Managers, according to him will be in charge of Engineering and Operations, Network Projects, Customer Services and Support Services.

The Managing Director charged the Ashanti SBU Management which assumes a semi-autonomous status to lead the staff to ensure the achievement of the following ECG strategic pillars in the SBU area within the pilot period:

  1. Improving system reliability
  2. Improving customer services
  3. Reducing system losses
  4. Improving operational efficiency
  5. Improving organizational culture

In his concluding statement, Mr. Robert Dwamena assured the Region of his unflinching support and urged staff to give our customers the opportunity to experience a pleasant and welcoming change for delightful customer care.

The launch was well attended by Directors from the Head Office and other invited guests.
